Andre Pierre
Andre Pierre was
born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1914. He is said to be the artistic
and spiritual heir of Hector Hyppolite (1894 - 1948). After deciding to
devote his life to *vodoun, Pierre became a houngan (vodoun priest)
and a religious painter. Seldon Rodman, said of Pierre in his book
'Where Art Is Joy: Haitian Art - The First Forty Years' "Gerard
Valcin and Wilmino Domond, next to Andre Pierre himself, were the dominant
figures of the second generation."
Andre Pierre is one of the
most famous Haitian artists and was classified by the former French Minister
Andre Malreaux as the best naïve artist in the world. This painting was bought by me
approximately 10 years ago directly from the artist in his vodoun priest
caille (hut) in St. Marc where he was the village houngan.
*Vodoun
is an African tribal religion brought to the Caribbean by African slaves &
combined with elements of Christianity. It should not be confused with
Voodoo which is essentially a caricature of the religion created by
Hollywood.
