Rene Exume
Rene Exume was born in 1929 in
Petionville, Haiti. In 1948 he joined the Centre d'Art, founded by
Dewit Peters. Because of his aptitude, he was
incorporated with the vanguardists and aside from his regular
studies at the center, he was a disciple of North
American painter W. Woldrock. Later, he was
part of
a dissatisfied group working in the basement,
who left and started the Foyer de Artes Plastiques in 1950,
where they sold all of their works in their first exhibition.
Rene Exume was named professor of design. He helped many young
artists by instructing children in drawing and painting
techniques until the gallery closed in the late 1980's. He did not work with
private galleries so his paintings are rarely on the open market. One of
Exume's paintings was featured in Jonathan Demme's book of Haitian art
titled "Island on Fire".
